"Good design is obvious. Great design is transparent."
- Joe Sparano
I love this quote and I believe it to be true. I'm passionate about making things people find useful, delightful or better yet magical, seamless, and beautiful.
Growing up you could find me drawing, painting, or sorting the buttons in my mom’s big button jar (by color, size, and type). Balancing imagination and pragmatism became a way of life, head in the clouds and feet on the ground.
I studied abroad in Florence, Italy and moved to New York City after graduating from college. I honed my graphic and writing skills and worked at creative companies in marketing and communications. I also worked in philanthropy and felt really good about making a difference in people’s lives.
My path led to graduate school where I earned an M.F.A. and was immersed in research, context, and critical theory. I learned the power of seeing old things in new ways, the importance of a thoughtful approach and meaningful result, and the integrity of being accountable for the work. Intense critiques taught me to effectively present and defend work while providing constructive feedback to others, and to bring snacks.
When I discovered design thinking and human centered design, I could have jumped on a couch for joy. Now I had the tools and methods I needed to apply all those skills and experiences toward solving problems and making a difference. Good design > happy people > better world. Living the dream.
